GENERAL PENCIL. General Pencil has been manufacturing pencils in the USA since 1889 in Jersey City, New Jersey. Family-owned and -operated for six generations, they make a variety of quality school, art and craft supplies. While most other manufacturers have outsourced their operations, General Pencil has kept their jobs and factory in the USA. Between 2016 and 2018, I made several dozen trips to the factory, photographing every aspect of production. A selection of these photographs was published in The New York Times Magazine in January 2018, with an accompanying essay by Sam Anderson.
